Coastal Strategy

The government department responsible for overall coastal strategy is Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs). In April 2008 Defra transferred all of its ‘delivery’ responsibilities to the Environment Agency when they were given a Strategic Overview role. More information on the Environment Agency’s Strategic Overview role can be found here.

The Environment Agency subsequently produced a Coastal Handbook, which amongst much else, describes the hierarchy of all roles and responsibilities relating to coastal issues.  A copy of it can be found here.
